Homework has always been a great example of a learning component that students cannot stand. Most students find homework an irritating task that kills their free time, while they don’t have a choice but to do it. Some students might compare it to slavery, as Ben Berrafato does, when he protests against it with such determination. However, I am not sure that students such as Ben truly understand the very logical objective that lies behind homework.
I believe that homework is necessary. I agree that it is quite absurd that students go to school every day in order to be taught there when they have to learn so much at home, but there is a reasonable objective behind this. Students gain knowledge at school, but the only way for the new knowledge to be assimilated is by practice. For example, a student may learn new material in math at school, but as long as he doesn’t try to deal with it on his own while practicing some exercises at home, he will never be able to solve those exercises in a test.
This kind of practice has to be done at home, because in the conditions of a classroom, such as the noise and the help of friends, one cannot really concentrate and practice his own ability to deal with the taught material.
I believe that as long as the given homework is in the right moderation, and is a reasonable practice for the material taught in class, it is a very essential component of learning. I don’t see it as slavery, since slavery is when your rights are being breached for the benefits of another person. When giving homework, school doesn’t benefit, and when given homework, the students’ rights aren’t being breached at all.
Very well put. You even succeeded in convincing me that homework is necessary.....
